Severe Weather Update
The Etowah County Sheriff's Office is on scene in the heavily damaged Smith Institute community, near Sardis City.
"Several structures, including some homes, have been destroyed and many more are severely damaged," says Sheriff Todd Entrekin.
So far only minor injuries have been sustained and no one is reported missing at this time. Sheriff's deputies and fire personnel are continuing to search the area.
Sheriff Entrekin adds, "We have a large inmate work crew in the area helping to clear debris from the road ways. We ask that no one travel to the area unless they are a resident in the community."
A unified command post has been set up at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Sardis Road.
Agencies involved in assisting residents in the area are: Etowah County Sheriff's Office, Sardis Police Department, Sardis Fire Department, Alabama Baptist disaster relief teams, Gadsden Fire Department, Boaz Fire Department, Reece City Fire Department, Sand Valley Fire Department, Marshall County Heavy Rescue Team, Douglas Police Department, A-Med Ambulance, Advantage Ambulance, Rural Metro Ambulance, Etowah County Road Department and numerous community volunteers.
*All Gadsden State Community College campuses will close at 2:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 29.
*Schools in the Etowah County & Attalla City school systems will be CLOSED Tuesday.
*Schools in the Gadsden City school system will be delayed for 2 hours on Tuesday morning. All after school activities have been cancelled due to the threat of severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening.
